Durham Police – Charges Laid in String of Arsons

A 40-year-old Clarington male faces numerous charges following a series of arsons in York Region and Durham Region. 

 

Investigators from the Central West Division Criminal Investigations Bureau commenced an investigation on Wednesday, November 24, 2021 following two arsons that occurred in Whitby and Oshawa. The suspect attended two separate addresses and set fire to vehicles at the two homes, which then spread to the residences. The suspect fled in a vehicle but he was located on Haines Road in Bowmanville.

 

Further investigation revealed the suspect also went to Stouffville and Markham on the same date and set fires to two vehicles at each property, which also spread to the homes.

 

There were no injuries reported and the occupants were able to get out safely. This is an isolated incident and the victims are known to the suspect. 

 

Nicholas COFFIN, age 40, of Clarington, is charged with: Arson with Disregard for Human Life x4; Possession of Incendiary Material and Arson Causing Damage to Property x7.   

 

He was held for a bail hearing.
