Cobourg Clarifies Flag Raising

In City Hall

The current lowered-flag observance in recognition of the discovery of remains at former residential schools means that, for Remembrance Day, flags must be intentionally raised again and lowered again in honour of Remembrance Day on Nov. 11.

A press release from the Town of Cobourg said that this would be the case for all town-owned flags on that day.

The direction to keep flags at half-mast until further notice in recognition of the tragedy at the residential schools originated May 30, it noted.

In recognition of Remembrance Day, both the Government of Canada and the Royal Canadian Legion have recently advised that flags will be temporarily raised at the National War Memorial in Ottawa before the Remembrance Day ceremony and then lowered again to half-mast,” the release stated.

In Cobourg, this will be the case for the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 133 at their 10:30 a.m. Ceremony at the Victoria Park cenotaph.

The town also reminds everyone that the flag poles at Victoria Hall above the portico are not equipped with halyard and pullies and, therefore, cannot fly a flag at half-mast. However, the newly installed flagpole to the east of the building can accommodate these current Federal directions.
