Simcoe Street – Names Released

(CITY OF KAWARTHA LAKES, ON) – Members of the City of Kawartha Lakes Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have released the identities of both deceased drivers in a fatal motor vehicle collision on Simcoe Street in Mariposa Township.

On October 9, 2021, at approximately 12:25 p.m., a northbound passenger vehicle passed unsafely and collided head-on with a southbound passenger vehicle on Simcoe Street, at Brock Concession Road 6, in Mariposa Township.

Both drivers, who were lone occupants in their respective vehicles, were pronounced deceased at the scene.

The deceased have been identified as Joseph DUCHESNE, 32 years of age, of Oakville, and Mark WALLACE, 57 years of age, of Durham Region.

The road was shut down for several hours while officers were on scene investigating.

Aggressive driving is dangerous and a leading causal factor in fatal motor vehicle collisions on OPP-patrolled roads.   

Racing, stunt driving, speeding, following too closely, unsafe lane changes and road rage are all forms of aggressive driving that place drivers, passengers, cyclists and pedestrians at risk.    

Motorists are reminded to slow down on roadways. Speeding is not worth the loss of a life. Dangerous drivers can be reported to OPP by calling 1-888-310-1122 or 9-1-1 in an emergency.

The OPP remains committed to saving lives on roadways, waterways and trails.
