Members of the Rotary Club of Port Hope and Port Hope Town Council, the Mowat family and members of the Parks Recreation and Advisory Committee along with interested citizens gathered at the newly named Farley Mowat Park on the east side of the Ganaraska River by the boat-roofed house on Wednesday, September 29 for a dedication ceremony.
The Rotary Club of Port Hope along with the Municipality of Port Hope, the Mowat family, Port Hope Public Library, Furby House Books and St. Mark’s Anglican Church held a weeklong celebration of Port Hope resident author Farley Mowat during the week of May 10 – 16. It would have been Farley’s 100th birthday on May 12. Farley passed away on May 6, 2014.
His works were translated into 26 languages, and he sold more than 17 million books. He achieved fame with the publication of his books on the Canadian north, such as People of the Deer and Never Cry Wolf.
As part of the celebrations in May, the Rotary Club asked the town to name the park by the boat-roofed house Farley Mowat Park to honour his memory. Due to Covid restrictions, the dedication ceremony was o[postponed until September.
The Rotary Club of Port Hope, along with Furby House Books, held a writing contest last May open to residents of Port Hope and also to those living in Arviat, Nunavut. Arviat is a village on the west side of Hudson’s Bay. Farley travelled there and worked with villagers on a film. There were three divisions for the writing contest – students in K – 8, students in 9 – 12 and adults. $100 prizes were awarded for the winning entry in each division. We did not receive any entries from Arviat, but prizes were awarded to the winners from Port Hope.
