Cobourg Councillor Aaron Burchat shares news with council this week about an exciting new police initiative – the Chief’s Youth Advisory Council.

“The hope is to increase connectiveness and better understanding of the kids and youth living and attending school in Cobourg,” Burchat said.

“It will also provide crucial feedback to guide our strategic priorities.”

This is open to young people aged 14 to 18, he said, and applications will be taken through the end of May.

While last week was Police Week, the councillor said, it was also the anniversary of the death of Constable Christopher Garrett who was killed in the line of duty May 15, 2004, after 13 years of service with the Cobourg Police Service.

Once details came out, Burchat said, it became clear that his sacrifice prevented the taking of many other lives. He expressed his tanks to all who attended the virtual remembrance service.

Burchat also had news from the fire department, which has fielded 481 calls for service so far in 2021.

While provincial regulations are putting curbs on what kind of training activities what might be undertaken and what kind of fire-prevention activities can be carried out, he added, year-to-date figures for those categories are 142 and 177 respectively.
