Durham Police – Suspect Arrested in Romance Fraud Investigation

A Whitby resident faces numerous charges after a romance fraud investigation resulted in the seizure of computer equipment and fraudulent documents.


On April 15, 2021, investigators from the DRPS Financial Crimes Unit commenced a fraud investigation in collaboration with Canada Post in relation to an online Romance Fraud. In February 2021, the victim was contacted by the suspect who was posing as a member of the military, planning on retiring in Canada. The victim began sending the suspect money to assist him and was defrauded of over $340,000.


As a result of the investigation, the suspect was arrested and members of the Financial Crimes Unit executed a search warrant on an address on Elton Way in Whitby. Officers seized computers, cash and other fraudulent documents.


Ituah OGUN, age 33, of Elton Way in Whitby is charged with: Fraud Over $5,000; Possession of Property Obtained by Crime; and Possession of Counterfeit Mark. He was released on an Undertaking.
