Cobourg Council – Be More Careful, Councillors Urge

In City Hall

By Cecilia Nasmith/Today’s Northumberland
Cobourg Councillor Aaron Burchat shared news from the Cobourg Police Service that indicates people need to be more careful.

Burchat said at this week’s council meeting that members of the police auxiliary had administered the Lock It Or Lose It test Dec. 10 on 216 vehicles. Only 176 passed, with doors locked, windows up and valuables out of sight.

Valuables left in plain view in cars that failed included six purses, three suitcases, two wallets, two backpacks, a phone and a GPS.

They are also on the lookout for Porch Pirates – people who steal parcels delivered and left on people’s porches. People should try to ensure they are home for deliveries, or at least have deliveries made to a secure location until they can be picked up.

A recent enforcement drive on distracted driving resulted in eight charges laid, Burchat continued.

Councillor Brian Darling added his own reminder of the winter-parking bylaw that requires cars to be off major artery and collector roads overnight to permit safe and effective snow plowing. To date, 70 tickets have been issued under this bylaw.
