Cobourg Council – Council Ponders Reinstating Parking and Transit Fees

In City Hall

By Cecilia Nasmith/Today’s Northumberland
Following the report by Director of Public Works Laurie Wills last week, Cobourg council passed a motion Tuesday governing when people might once again pay to park and ride public transit in Cobourg.

The motion calls on staff to resume the collection of these fees once Victoria Hall is once again open to the public – with a minimum of two weeks’ notice provided.

Councillor Brian Darling pointed out that the free waterfront parking season is now in effect with the off-season that begins on Thanksgiving. As for downtown parking, he said, a report can be expected Oct. 26.

As well, staff will continue with reduced service hours for conventional transit until Jan. 18, while implementing normal operational hours for Extended Specialized Wheels Service.

Darling anticipated this should come in early November, establishing weekday hours of 6:15 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday hours of 8:15 a.m. to 6:45 p.m., and Sunday hours of 8:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.

The motion also instructs the accessibility advisory committee to look into the feasibility of free parking in all accessible parking spaces and provide a recommendation to council.
