City of Kawartha Lakes OPP – Missing ATV Riders Located

In Police Blotter

An ATV (All Terrain Vehicle) ride turned into an overnight challenge for two local residents.

Just after 5:00 a.m. on October 12, 2020 officers from the City of Kawartha Lakes detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a missing persons call. Initial information indicated that at approximately 6:00p.m. on October 11, 2020 two persons had set out for a short ATV ride in the Norland area and failed to return home.

The officers utilized ATV’s on the local trail system and were able to locate the pair, in good health. Investigation indicated that the ATV being used had broken down in an area of challenging terrain. With the approach of darkness and an unfamiliarity with the trail system, the pair chose a spot to start a fire which they used to keep warm through the night.

The OPP would like to remind those using our trail systems to have a safety plan in place that includes telling someone what route will be used, carrying a fully charged cell phone and dressing for the weather.
