Port Hope Prepares for Virtual Canada Day

In City Hall

As summer arrives, the Municipality of Port Hope has announced plans for its first-ever virtual Canada Day celebration July 1.

“Canada Day is going to look a little bit different this year, as we cannot host our usual large event downtown,” Mayor Bob Sanderson said in the announcement.

“But staff have taken inspiration from the home-grown traditions that our residents have come to expect at our Canada Day celebrations and moved them on-line.

“Throughout the pandemic, I have been impressed and encouraged by the creativity and innovation shown by so many at home. I have no doubt that we will be able to unite on-line and share this national holiday together.”

Residents are encouraged to visit the municipality’s Canada Day web page for the full program of activities and opportunities available to unite the community in a virtual celebration. These include an 11 a.m. singing of the national anthem from home, followed by a community-wide cheer.

Other ways to celebrate include the Port Hope Pancake Challenge, a virtual Show N Shine (a new spin on an old tradition), a free guided yoga session in the comfort of your home, a virtual fireworks display, a photo-submission challenge (complete with prizes) and the #frommyporch art challenge in collaboration with Critical Mass Art.

The municipality reminds residents of the council resolution governing the sale and discharge of fireworks in the municipality, which is prohibited this Canada Day.

The municipality also sends thanks to the partners and sponsors for their on-going support and commitment to this project.
