Update – Northumberland OPP – Prince Edward County Woman Charged Impaired Driving

In Police Blotter

(CRAMAHE TOWNSHIP, ON) – On Monday June 15, 2020 just before 2:00 pm, members from the Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were notified by a concerned motorist of a possible impaired driver travelling eastbound on Highway 401 approaching the Northumberland County area in Port Hope.

A grey Hyundai four door sedan was described as swerving all over the road, travelling at inconsistent speeds almost colliding with guardrails and several other motor vehicles. The concerned motorist continued to update police as it followed the vehicle until it exited the highway at the 497 eastbound exit of Highway 401 at Big Apple Drive. The vehicle was intercepted by officers that were set up at that location conducting a Reduced Impaired Driving Everywhere (R.I.D.E) check point.

The officer conducted a Standardized Field Sobriety Test (SFST) at the scene as the individual was displaying signs of impairment. The driver performed the test poorly and was arrested for impaired operation. The driver was then transported to the Northumberland OPP detachment in Brighton to perform the drug recognition evaluation.

Paula GURNEY (age 52) from Prince Edward County, Ontario has been charged with:
· Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs.

The accused was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on August 19, 2020.

Police continue to rely on members of the public to report suspected impaired drivers. Many of these drivers are caught because of concerned citizens being conscious of irregular or erratic driving behaviours that continue to put other motorists at risk of tragedies caused by impaired drivers on our roadways.

The Northumberland County OPP reminds motorists that any amount of alcohol or drugs can impact your ability to make sound judgements.
