Northumberland OPP – Reminders Of Enforceable Highway Traffic Act Offences

In Police Blotter

The Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) want to take this opportunity to make community members and all road users aware of offences under the Highway Traffic Act that officers enforce but are seldom talked about.

The following are chargeable offences in Ontario under the Highway Traffic Act:

Loads – Ensure the load you are transporting is properly bound, secured or covered so that the load will not become dislodged, fall or leak from the vehicle.

Tinted windows – No percentage of tint is permitted on the surface of the windshield or any window to the direct left or right of the drivers seat that substantially obstructs view into the motor vehicle from the outside.

Trailers – All trailers must be plated and you must carry with you the permit (ownership) for the trailer you will be towing. Ensure all lights are in working order on the trailer and that it has a secondary means of attachment to the vehicle towing the trailer.

Bicycles – All bicycles must stop at stop signs, signal when turning and be equipped with a working bell or horn and have functioning lights one- half hour before sunset and one half hour after sunrise. Bicycle riders under the age of 18 must wear a helmet and if under 16 their parents or guardians can be fined if found not wearing one.

Mufflers – excessive or unusual noise stemming from aftermarket mufflers or from a damaged or corroded exhaust are both offences.

E-Bikes – All operators and passengers must be at least 16 years of age and wear an approved helmet. All E-Bikes must be equipped with working pedals and not exceed 32 km/h

Licence plates – you must display valid plate(s) in accordance with your vehicle type. Ensure your plate(s) are clean and are not displayed behind colored or tinted plate covers.

Remember that driving is a priviledge and with that comes responsibility. Refer to the Ontario Highway Traffic Act and familiarize yourself with the rules of the road and ensure you do your part by following them.
