Cobourg Reminds Residents Not To Flush Paper Towel or Wipes

In City Hall

In response to the recent shortage of toilet paper due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Town of Cobourg would like to remind residents to only flush toilet paper into the sewer system, not paper towels, tissues, napkins or wipes.

Paper towels, tissues and sanitary wipes all contain plastic binders that give them added strength, even the brands that claim to be flushable. This means that those products will not break down or start to disintegrate from the turbulence of flushing, which could risks blocking a lateral sewer line (the sewer line that runs from your house to the main sewer in the street).

“We understand that in response to COVID-19 residents may have to use other products,” says Laurie Wills, Director of Public Works. “However, flushing certain items, like wipes, down your toilet can result in costly sewer maintenance, for the Town and for homeowners. We are asking for your help to take care of and maintain your sanitary system as a critical component of your household.”

Due to the limited stock of toilet paper on store shelves, some residents may be forced to use paper towels, napkins, wipes or tissues. It is best to dispose of these items in the garbage or compost to avoid sewage backing up or damage to the sewage system.

Flushing debris can cause downstream infrastructure to become damaged and jeopardize the operations of the sewage treatment plants and pumping stations. Please also be aware that due to the COVID-19 outbreak, Town of Cobourg staff service calls to private properties are limited to emergencies only, so response times will be prolonged and resources may be depleted.
