Cobourg Council – Cobourg Honours First Poet Laureate

In City Hall

By Cecilia Nasmith/Today’s Northumberland
Mayor John Henderson and other councillors at Monday’s meeting were effusively in their praise of Cobourg’s first poet laureate Eric Winter.

Many had attended the recent celebration of life held in his honour after his passing (along with Cobourg’s current poet laureate Jessica Outram), and condolences were extended to his widow Dorothy.

Henderson brandished a copy of his book Snippets, which he offered to share with councillors.

Councillor Nicole Beatty delivered Winter’s daily Cobourg Star when he was first named poet laureate, and she confided in him her own wish to be a writer one day. Then, at Christmas time – while her other clients were surprising her with chocolates – Winter presented her with a journal to encourage the habit.

It’s something she still does every day, she said, displaying her journal.

“You never know how impactful one person can be,” Beatty said.

“Thank you to Mr. Winter for an important honour – and the gift.”
