Northumberland County – Start Using Your Green Bin December 2

In City Hall

By Cecilia Nasmith/Today’s Northumberland
Starting Monday, Northumberland residents can put their organic food waste out in green bins on waste-collection day in addition to their grey waste-paper bins and blue container-recycling bins.

“These new collection programs are cornerstones of the county’s Long-Term Waste Management Master Plan, the overall goal of which is to divert more than 75% of residential waste from our landfill,” Northumberland Director of Transportation, Waste and Facilities Mo Pannu stated in the county press release.

“The new green-bin program will divert over 2,000 tonnes of food waste from the landfill each year, with the new Recycle Right program achieving an additional 1,000 tonnes of diversion,” Pannu estimated.

“We are very pleased to be launching these programs, which will generate many positive environmental benefits for our community.”

By now, blue, grey and green gins have been delivered to most Northumberland households. The county is working to complete these deliveries though – in cases where households have not yet received these supplies – residents can continue with current practices setting out recyclables in clear or clear-blue bags) until the new boxes arrive.
