SIU Investigating Death of Man who was Lodged in Police Station Cell in Oshawa

The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 32-year-old man last night in Oshawa.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
Around noon on November 5, 2019, Durham Regional Police Service officers attended the area of Simcoe Street and Highway 401 in relation to an altercation between individuals.
A man was arrested. He was transported to hospital, and then later released and lodged in a police station cell.
At approximately 11 p.m., the man was found in medical distress. First aid was commenced, and Emergency Medical Services attended.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to this incident. A post-mortem will take place tomorrow morning in Toronto.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have information regarding this incident to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529. The Unit is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.
