Habitat for Humanity Northumberland Prepares for the 2019 Gingerbread Festival

In Community

It’s almost time for Habitat for Humanity Northumberland’s annual Gingerbread Festival! Entering it’s fifth year as a holiday tradition for Habitat Northumberland, this year’s festival moves to the Habitat Northumberland ReStore! The 2019 Gingerbread Festival will run for one day only, Saturday November 23, with over 55 gingerbread houses on display at the ReStore.

Habitat Northumberland held the first local Gingerbread Festival in 2015. Since then, the festival has seen over 200 gingerbread creations from across Northumberland County. Habitat volunteers will kick-off the 2019 Gingerbread Festival by distributing gingerbread cookie kits to children attending the Christmas Magic tree lighting ceremony on Friday, November 22nd, in downtown Cobourg. Baked by the Dutch Oven, these cookie kits have been generously sponsored by the Town of Cobourg with candy donated by the Canada Candy Co.

Local community organizations, schools, individuals and businesses have come together to create the gingerbread for this annual festival.

This year Habitat Northumberland will raffle off the professional, community and kids’ gingerbread creations. Available onsite, raffle tickets for Community/Kids’ entries will be $2.00 for 1 ticket or $5.00 for 3 tickets. Tickets for Professional entries will be $5.00 for 1 ticket or $20.00 for 5 tickets. All proceeds from the fundraiser will go directly into Habitat’s homebuilding program which helps families achieve strength, stability and independence through affordable homeownership.

The 2019 Gingerbread Festival will be open for viewing at the ReStore (764 Division Street in Cobourg) from 9:30am-5:30pm on Saturday, November 23rd. A panel of judges will review the gingerbread to pick the top three entries from each of three decorating categories: Kids (12 and under), Community and Professional.

The wrap up for the 2019 Gingerbread Festival will take place at 5pm during which prizes and ribbons will be awarded to the winning entries, with the draw for the gingerbread raffle of the Gingerbread houses taking place shortly thereafter. Lucky gingerbread winners may pick up their houses November 25th-29th at the ReStore in Cobourg.

A list of gingerbread winners and photos of the winning Gingerbread entries will be displayed on Habitat’s website and social media pages following the festival.
