Cobourg Police are investigating after three separate fires were deliberately set in the early hours of Tuesday, August 27, 2019.
At 12:18 a.m. firefighters responded to the area of William Street and Harden Street after garbage was set on fire beside a composite hydro pole which was also caught fire.
The fire was quickly extinguished, but just minutes later at 12:31 a.m. firefighters responded to a second fire south of the first location near William and Ontario Streets.
A Blue Box bin was on fire along the west side of the roadway. Firefighters once again quickly extinguished the fire.
At 1:28 a.m. a Cobourg Police officer who was on scene of the second fire noticed flames which appeared to be coming from the Cobourg Library.
The police officer doused the flames before fire crews arrived on scene, but a small amount of smoke did enter the building.
Captain Chris Brown said another garbage bin had been set in fire in an alcove of the library.
“It was directly against the building, there was a danger this could have gone inside the building.”
A Forensic Identification Officer examined each scene and collected evidence.
Cobourg Police and Northumberland OPP patrolled Cobourg throughout the night looking for anything suspicious.
Hydro crews were called to the scene and braced the damaged pole until it can be replaced. The
The Cobourg Police Service have canvassed local business’s for video but are also looking for assistance from any member of the public who may have video surveillance or witnessed anyone walking on William Street between King and Elgin Street between midnight and 1:30 am today.
The fire at the library caused damage to the brick and electrical outlets.
