Cobourg Police – Shortly before 3:00 pm on June 19, 2019 there was a brief lockdown at St. Mary’s Secondary School in Cobourg. The lockdown lasted about 20 minutes while members of the Cobourg Police Service searched the building. The lockdown has since been cancelled.
There is no danger to the public from this incident. The investigation is ongoing and further information will be provided if possible.
Today’s Northumberland contacted school board communications spokesperson Galen Eagle who stated, “there was a perceived threat on school grounds that resulted in a call to police and a lockdown.”
“Police responded, deemed the situation safe after a school sweep and the lockdown was lifted after about 20 minutes.”
The situation occurred well after dismissal time said Eagle, so there were few staff and students in the school at the time of the lockdown.
An e-mail was sent to parents at 7:21 p.m. about the incident which Eagle forwarded to Today’s Northumberland.
Dear Parents/Guardians,
The purpose of this email is to inform you about a situation that occurred at the school after dismissal time this afternoon.
Shortly before 3 p.m. police were contacted after a student observed what they perceived as a suspicious person on school grounds.
The school went into a brief lockdown while police arrived to search the school. The lockdown ended after about 20 minutes.
Cobourg Police Service continues to investigate the matter, but say there is no threat to the public.
St. Mary will be open as usual tomorrow and exams will proceed as planned.
If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact the school during school hours.
Sincerely,
Rob Majdell
School Principal
