The final PACE talk of the 2018-2019 season takes place May 15 at Northumberland Hills Hospital, as Dr. Anuja Sharma leads a discussion on the topic of skin care.

An internal-medicine specialist with the IM Care team at NHH, Dr. Sharma has been in clinical practice since 1996. Her clinical interests include diseases of the skin, thyroid disorders, osteoporosis and arthritis.
“Skin is the largest and most visible organ of the body,” Dr. Sharma said in the press release.
“It protects us from the elements, allows us to sense touch, pain, pressure, acts as a temperature regulator of the body, and alo nourishes us by making vitamin D,” she listed.
“It has great ability to heal itself and, when tocuhed in a gentle way, it even lowers the stress hormones.”

Dr. Sharma’s PACE presentation will explore the ways we take care of our skin, make it more resilient (or more prone to disease and skin cancer), She will explore such questions as what simple day-to-day things we can do to make our skin healthier, how to choose among various skin-care products (and what to avoid), and what some signs and symptoms might be for the early detection and cure of skin cancer.

A collaborative between community health-care providers and local residents interested in learning more and promoting health and wellness, PACE talks were begun by Dr. Mukesh Bhargava as a form of TED Talks geared to the health concerns and interests he was hearing from his patients. The name stands for Personalized Assessment and Change Education, and the monthly presentations alternate between NHH in Cobourg and the Community Health Centres of Northumberland in Port Hope.
The sessions last for about an hour, consisting of a 30-minute talk, a 20-minute question-and-answer period, and a 10-minute moderator summary.

Dr. Sharma’s session will begin at 5:30 p.m. May 15 on the second-floor Education Centre at NHH (1000 DePalma Dr,). Please bring your questions, suggestions and experience to take part in what is expected to be another lively discussion.
If you have a smart phone, you are invited to bring it along to participate in real-time event feedback. Audience feedback will also be gathered in a non-technological format.

Like all pace talks, Dr. Sharma’s presentation is free, but pre-registration is required in order to manage room capacity.
