From the 28th day of January, 2019 through the 3rd day of February, 2019 the Cobourg Police Service responded to 132 occurrences including; 7 Community Service calls, 14 Police Assistance calls, 4 Traffic Complaints, 5 Fraud calls, 4 Police Information calls, 3 Property Related calls, 3 Assault calls, 2 – 911 calls, 8 Theft calls, 10 Motor Vehicle Collisions, 3 Alarm calls, 2 Disturb the Peace calls, 2 Threats calls, 2 Domestic Dispute calls, 8 Attempt or Threat of Suicide, 1 Mischief call. Some examples of calls for service this week include;

Monday, January 28, 2019:

At approximately 01:30hrs Officers responded to a residential address in the downtown core after receiving a report of an active fire inside the home. Police Investigation revealed the fire was the result of a malfunctioning dishwasher. Two individuals were transported to Northumberland Hills Hospital by paramedics as a precautionary measure.

At approximately 8:20hrs an Officer on general patrol conducted a traffic stop on a motor vehicle travelling on Elgin Street East in the Town of Cobourg. As a result of a subsequent investigation 47 year old David BEESLEY of the Town of Cobourg was charged with operating a motor vehicle while prohibited under the Criminal Code and Speeding, Failing to Have Validation on number plate and operating a motor vehicle not equipped with ignition interlock device under the Highway Traffic Act. BEESLEY was released from Police custody on a promise to appear scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in March 2019.

Officers conducted overnight checks of the Warming Room/Outdoor Rink located at 35 Albert Street in the Town of Cobourg. All patrols were completed without incident, everything noted to be in order throughout the duration of the evening.

Tuesday, January 29, 2019:

At approximately 9:00am Officers from Port Hope Police Service arrested a female wanted on the strength of two outstanding warrants held by Cobourg Police. As a result of a subsequent investigation by the Cobourg Police Service, 31 year old Carly MAGEE of the Town of Port Hope was charged with failing to attend court and failing to comply with probation under the Criminal Code. MAGEE was released from custody on a Promise to Appear scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on the 27th day of February 2019.
At 4:20pm Officers responded to a residential address located in the east end of town after receiving a report of a theft from motor vehicle overnight. Police investigation revealed the vehicle had been left unlocked. No reported witness or suspects at this time.
At approximately 6:50pm Police responded to a single vehicle collision on Elgin Street East. Minor Injury reported. The sole occupant was transported to Northumberland Hills Hospital by Paramedics for medical treatment.
Wednesday, January 30, 2019

At 9:35 am Officers responded to west end residential address after receiving a report of an after the fact assault. The victim had been stuck with a solid glass ashtray, in the head and sustained minor injuries. The victim was transported to Northumberland Hills Hospital where he was treated and later released. As a result of the police investigation, 44 year old Stephen Liggins of Cobourg was arrested and charged with Assault with a weapon under the Criminal Code. Liggins was subsequently released on a promise to appear and undertaking scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in March 2019.

At 3:00pm Officers were dispatched to a business in the east end of Cobourg, regarding a mischief which had reportedly occurred overnight. Investigating officers learned unknown person(s) had added sugar and water to the gas tank of an involved motor vehicle. No suspects. No witnesses. Investigation continues.

At 10:50pm Police were dispatched to a west end neighborhood after receiving a 9-1-1 from a residential address. Police attended and learned a 13 year old had dialed 9-1-1 in error. All in order.

Thursday, January 31, 2019

Police responded to a local business in regard to a reported shoplifter. A female party was placed under arrest. The stolen items valued at $30.00 were returned without incident. The involved female was issued a Provincial Offences Notice under the Trespass to Property Act, and subsequently trespassed from the business.

Police attended a local business in the down town at approximately 2:00pm in response to an intrusion alarm. Officers conducted a search of the exterior premise and determined everything was in order

At 5:00pm Police responded to a report of a two vehicle collision in an east end neighborhood. No injuries reported property damage only. As a result of subsequent Police investigation one driver was charged under the Highway Traffic Act.

Friday, February 1, 2019

Officers conducted overnight checks of the Warming Room/Outdoor Rink located at 35 Albert Street in the Town of Cobourg. All patrols were completed without incident, everything in order throughout the duration of the evening.
Officers responded to a residential address located in the west end of Cobourg, regarding an alleged Fraud. Police Investigation determined that after a theft of personal identification from an unlocked motor vehicle, stolen credit cards were utilized in various cities between Oshawa and Kingston to complete point of sale purchases. No suspects to date. Investigation continues.

A resident of the Town of Cobourg attended the Cobourg Police Station requesting to speak with Police regarding a suspected fraud not exceeding $5,000.00. The victim advised Police when working on his computer a warning began flashing across his monitor, instructing him to contact Microsoft for further assistance. Upon contacting Microsoft at the phone number provided the victim was informed his computer had a virus, which could be fixed immediately by a technician for a fee of $593.11. The victim provided a sum of money to “SHANKAR I FIX PC”. Investigation has determined the transaction was fraudulent. Investigation continues.

Saturday, February 2, 2019

Police responded to a report of a hold up alarm at a business located in the downtown core at approximately 12:30pm. Investigation revealed the alarm was accidently set off by Staff. All in order.

At approximately 2:30am Officers were requested to attend a residential neighborhood in the east end of Cobourg, after receiving a report of loud beeping in the area. Investigation determined that the noise was associated to snow removal vehicles operating in the area. All in order.

At 7:40pm Officers were dispatched to a west end address after receiving a report of a vehicle travelling erratically on the roadway. Officers conducted an extensive search of the area, but were unable to locate the any motor vehicle matching the description provided of the involved vehicle. All in order.

Sunday, February 3, 2019

Cobourg Police Service Uniform Officers conducted routine patrols of Rotary Park located at 35 Albert Street thought out the overnight hours. . All patrols were completed without incident.
At 7:00am Officers responded to a residential address located in the east end of town after receiving a report of a theft from motor vehicle overnight. Police investigation revealed the vehicle had been left unlocked. No reported witness or suspects at this time.
At approximately 7:30pm, Officers on patrol observed a male known to have outstanding warrants for his arrest held by the Cobourg Police Service. As a result of Police Investigation 36 year old John Vandusen of Cobourg was arrested and charged with Assault, Unlawfully in a dwelling house, and failing to attend court under the Criminal Code. The accused was subsequently released on a Promise to Appear, scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice on the 13th day of March 2019.
