Province to Offer Free Fishing to Veterans and Active Armed Forces Members
Ontario’s Government for the People is planning to honour past and present members of the Canadian Armed Forces, who have sacrificed so much for the people of Ontario and Canada. Work is underway to amend fishing regulations so veterans and active Canadian Armed Forces members can enjoy free recreational fishing by early 2019.
With this change, all veterans and active Canadian Armed Forces members who reside in Ontario would enjoy recreational fishing across the province without having to buy a fishing licence.
“We enjoy the rights and freedoms we have today because of the sacrifices of those brave women and men throughout history, and those actively serving to defend our rights and freedoms,” said John Yakabuski, Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry. “The people of Ontario are grateful for the service of our veterans and active Canadian Armed Forces members who have, and continue to defend our freedom and values. These heroes deserve our gratitude and respect, and this is one small way we can show that.”
“Recreational fishing is an important part of the lives of many Ontarians. Whether you’re a beginner or expert, fishing is an excellent way to get outdoors, relax, de-stress and get involved in your local community,” said Yakabuski.
Ontario has a great diversity of freshwater fish and is recognized worldwide for its recreational fishing. By allowing veterans and active Canadian Armed Forces to fish for free, Ontario is making life a little easier for those who gave and continue to give so honourably with their service.
This is one of several steps Ontario’s Government for the People is taking during Remembrance week to show Ontario’s appreciation for veterans, Canadian Armed Forces and their families. The province recently announced they will ensure Royal Canadian Legion branches in the province are exempt from paying property tax.
The Premier has announced consultations on a new hotline for military families moving to Ontario. This hotline will make it easier to find information on healthcare, schools, job opportunities, child care, licensing for drivers and vehicles and other programs and services.
The government has also announced plans to build a memorial that honours heroes of the war in Afghanistan, on the grounds of the Ontario Legislature.
