Cobourg Staffers Roll Up Their Sleeves to Find Savings

Cobourg staffers rolling up their sleeves to find ways to reduce the town’s insurance bill for the coming year is what Mayor Lucas Cleveland called a good-news story at this week’s committee-of-the-whole council meeting.

The result was a $768,208.76 premium that represented an increase of only 5.32% (or $38,793) over this year’s premium.

The initial bill received was much higher, Treasurer Ian Davey said. But staff worked with the insurance company and came up with a figure that will have far less of an impact on next year’s budget.

“We have had a very good claims-experience rating in the last few years and that, again, is a compliment to all staff, especially Public Works and Community Services trying to eliminate hazards as much as they can,” Davey said.

“Great news, and a job well done for staff, going through those reports with a fine-tooth comb to find those savings,” Cleveland declared.

The McDougall Insurance representative present complimented the diligence of staffers willing to prioritize logbooks and provide accurate data, singling out staffer Renee Champagne and the documentation she provided.
