Port Hope Poppy Campaign Begins With Presentation of First Poppy to Mayor

October 23, 2026 Port Hope Legion Launches Poppy Campaign

The annual Poppy Campaign officially got underway in Port Hope on Friday, October 23, with Mayor Olena Hankivsky receiving the first poppy at the town’s cenotaph.

The presentation marked the beginning of the 2026 campaign leading up to Remembrance Day on Wednesday, November 11, when Canadians will gather to honour the men and women who served and sacrificed for their country.

With the launch of the campaign, volunteers with the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 30 in Port Hope are preparing for the weeks ahead, joining Legion branches and volunteers throughout Northumberland County in ensuring the community remembers the significance of the poppy.

Worn from October 24 until Remembrance Day on November 11, the poppy serves as a visible pledge to never forget those who serve, those who have served and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The familiar red flower is more than a symbol of remembrance. Donations collected through the campaign help support Veterans and their families.

The Royal Canadian Legion follows strict bylaws and guidelines governing the use of Poppy Trust Funds to ensure donations and payments for ceremonial wreaths provide direct support to Veterans and their families.

Throughout Port Hope, Legion volunteers will distribute poppies in partnership with the municipality, local businesses, community organizations and schools.

Residents can expect to see Legion members and other volunteers outside storefronts and at community gathering places in the coming days. Poppy donation boxes will also be available at businesses throughout the community.

As Remembrance Day approaches, the campaign offers residents an opportunity to honour the sacrifices of generations of Canadians and recognize the service of those who continue to protect the freedoms enjoyed today.

The message remains simple: wear the poppy, remember the fallen and never forget.
