Video – Ontario Announces $6.1 Million Healthcare Investment in Northumberland–Peterborough South

More than $6.1 million is being invested in health-care services and infrastructure across Northumberland–Peterborough South, with Northumberland Hills Hospital, Campbellford Memorial Hospital and the Community Health Centres of Northumberland all receiving funding.

The announcement was made Wednesday (September 23, 2026) by David Piccini, MPP for Northumberland–Peterborough South.

The $6,183,459 investment will support hospital operations, infrastructure renewal, diagnostic imaging, surgical care and community health-centre improvements.

“Strong local health care starts with making sure our hospitals and healthcare facilities have the resources they need to provide high-quality care, closer to home,” said Piccini.

“These investments will support important infrastructure improvements; increase access to diagnostic imaging and surgical care; and provide our local hospitals with additional resources to meet the needs of patients across Northumberland.”

Northumberland Hills Hospital

Northumberland Hills Hospital is receiving the largest share, with $4,583,613 in total funding.

That includes:

• $2,909,700 in additional base funding for 2026–27, representing a 3.1 per cent increase over 2025–26.
• $1,284,713 through the Health Infrastructure Renewal Fund for critical infrastructure renewal and improvements, including replacement of the hospital’s cooling tower.
• $389,200 in Incremental Surgical Recovery Funding for 2025–26 to support additional surgical activity and help address demand and wait times.

Susan Walsh, President and CEO of Northumberland Hills Hospital, said the investment comes as the county continues to grow and age.

“As Northumberland County continues to grow and age, so does the need for timely access to high-quality hospital services,” Walsh said.

She said the infrastructure funding will allow the hospital to complete necessary work, specifically replacing its chiller, which manages temperature and humidity inside the hospital.

The funding will also provide additional base funding and targeted dollars for high-need areas, including surgical services.

Campbellford Memorial Hospital

Campbellford Memorial Hospital will receive $1,410,776.

The funding includes:

• $1,116,700 in additional base funding for 2026–27, a 4.0 per cent increase over 2025–26.
• $175,576 through the Health Infrastructure Renewal Fund for critical infrastructure renewal and improvements.
• $118,500 for additional CT hours during 2025–26 to increase diagnostic imaging capacity and help reduce wait times.

“We are grateful for this investment in Campbellford Memorial Hospital and what it will mean for our patients and the communities we serve,” said CEO Jeff Hohenkerk.

Hohenkerk said the funding will help improve clinical infrastructure and expand CT capacity while supporting the hospital’s existing services.

“As we continue working toward a new hospital for our community, investments like these are critical to ensuring CMH can continue providing safe, high-quality care today while we build for the future,” he said.

Community health centres also receive funding

The Community Health Centres of Northumberland is receiving $189,070 through the Community Infrastructure Renewal Fund for HVAC upgrades.

Chiara Campitelli-Thompson, Executive Director, said the organization’s Port Hope location provides more than primary care and community programs.

“It also serves as a cooling and warming centre during extreme weather,” she said.

The funding will help maintain clean air and consistent temperatures throughout the building, creating what Campitelli-Thompson described as a healthier environment for clients, staff and community members.

“For a smaller organization like CHCN, capital funding of this kind makes a meaningful and lasting difference for everyone who walks through our doors,” she said.

County welcomes investment

Northumberland County Warden Bob Crate also welcomed the announcement.

“Strong local health care is fundamental to the community’s well-being,” Crate said.

He said the investment will help ensure local hospitals and community health partners have the infrastructure and resources needed to continue delivering care close to home.

“As our community grows and demand for health services increases, investments like these help strengthen our local system and its capacity to meet the evolving needs of residents,” Crate said.

“On behalf of County Council, I thank the Province of Ontario for this important investment.”

The Ontario government says the funding is part of its Your Health: A Plan for Connected and Convenient Care, which it says is focused on expanding access to key health services and providing care in the appropriate setting.

Overall, Northumberland Hills Hospital receives $4,583,613, Campbellford Memorial Hospital receives $1,410,776, and the Community Health Centres of Northumberland receives $189,070, bringing the total announced investment to $6,183,459.
