Video – Signs, Salmon and Some Anglers Still Missing the Message
You would have to work pretty hard to miss the signs.
Along the Ganaraska River through Port Hope, the message is clear: NO FISHING from September 1 to October 14.
Yet on Sunday, September 13, at least two people appeared to have missed it.
One person was spotted fishing beneath the Walton Street bridge Sunday afternoon, while another angler was seen with a fish on his line just south of Jocelyn Street.
The restrictions are in place during the annual salmon migration, when thousands of people come to Port Hope to watch the fish make their way upstream.
And there was certainly no shortage of people in town Sunday.
Cavan Street, north of Jocelyn Street, was lined with vehicles as visitors stopped to get a glimpse of the salmon making their way toward Corbett’s Dam.
The popularity of the annual salmon run was obvious, but so was another problem.
Approximately 15 vehicles were parked on the wrong side of Cavan Street as people crowded into the area to watch the fish.
For those following the rules, the message is simple: watch the salmon — don’t fish for them.
And while the salmon may be the main attraction in Port Hope this time of year, drivers should also remember that road rules still apply, even when there is a spectacular show happening in the river.
