In My Opinion: A Cobourg Sunset and Life’s Greatest Lesson
There are some things in life that never lose their magic.
For me, it’s watching the sun disappear beyond Lake Ontario in my hometown of Cobourg.
It’s even better when I’m standing on the east pier beside my 89-year-old father.
We talk about the day – watch the boats return from an evening of fishing, or families enjoying one last cruise before darkness settles over the harbour. Two youths enjoying friendship while fishing and looking forward to a life ahead. We take in the sounds of the water, the breeze off the lake, and the colours in the sky that somehow never look exactly the same twice.
The older I get, the more my perspective changes about life. Beginning to understand that time is our most valuable possession. We all like to think there will be another tomorrow, another sunset, another chance to say the things we’ve been meaning to say. But life doesn’t make those promises.
The older you become, the more you realize you’re living on the downhill side of time. That isn’t meant to be gloomy—it’s meant to be a reminder that every ordinary day is, in fact, extraordinary.
Life brings its share of frustrations. There are deadlines, disappointments, worries, and problems that seem impossible to escape. But somewhere during the day, we all need to find a place that reminds us what truly matters.
For me, that place is Cobourg Harbour.
One of the unexpected joys of the evening wasn’t just the sunset—it was the people. Complete strangers we met, Dad sharing stories about the harbour decades ago and what Cobourg was like when my father was a young man. About the days when the ferry crossed Lake Ontario, connecting communities in a way that now exists only in photographs and memories.
Pleasant conversations, sharing stories. Learning why people came to Cobourg to live. What makes it so special.
Perhaps that’s the greatest lesson a sunset can offer. It quietly tells us to pause. To appreciate where we are. To appreciate who we’re with. To understand that the moments we often overlook become the memories we treasure most.
Tomorrow is never guaranteed, but today was amazing.
