Video – Photo Gallery – So Much Life in a Park Named After a Fallen Cobourg Police Officer
Tucked away in a quiet residential neighbourhood, Chris Garrett Memorial Park may not be one of Cobourg’s best-known parks, but for those who visit, it offers a peaceful place to walk, reflect and enjoy nature while serving as a lasting tribute to a local hero.
The park, located on Birchwood Trail just north of Elgin Street East and east of Division Street, is named in honour of Cobourg Police Constable Chris Garrett, whose courage and sacrifice on May 15, 2004, left a lasting mark on the community.
In the early morning hours of that day, Garrett responded to a call that would ultimately cost him his life. Although he was mortally wounded during the confrontation, he continued pursuing his assailant and managed to strike him with his final bullet, an act credited with preventing further tragedy.
Garrett died at the scene. His 18-year-old attacker was later convicted of first-degree murder. In recognition of his extraordinary bravery, Garrett was posthumously awarded the Star of Courage by the Governor General of Canada.
Today, the park that bears his name stands as both a memorial and a place full of life.
The Town of Cobourg’s Parks Department maintains the property with great care, and their efforts were especially evident on Friday evening, July 24, when the park looked its very best. Well-kept grass, tidy pathways and flourishing greenery created an inviting setting for visitors.
Residents strolled along the walking paths, while others enjoyed an evening walk with their dogs. The peaceful surroundings also attracted an abundance of wildlife.
Canada geese wandered across the open grass, a rabbit quietly foraged near the edge of the trail, and a majestic blue heron stood motionless near the water, reminding visitors that the park is not only a place of remembrance but also a thriving natural habitat.
For many, Chris Garrett Memorial Park is simply a pleasant place to spend an evening outdoors. But beneath its tranquil beauty lies a deeper purpose. Every path, every tree and every quiet moment serves as a reminder of the sacrifice made by a police officer whose final act of courage helped protect others.
In a community that has never forgotten Constable Chris Garrett, the park remains a living tribute—filled each day with the life he gave so much to preserve.
