Capitol Theatre Opens 2026 Fall Season with Gaslight

The Capitol Theatre in Port Hope is set to open its fall season with a fresh take on one of theatre’s most celebrated psychological thrillers.

Gaslight, written by Johnna Wright and Patty Jamieson and based on Patrick Hamilton’s classic 1938 play, runs from August 21 through September 6, 2026. Directed by Marie Farsi, the Canadian adaptation offers audiences a modern reimagining of the suspense-filled story.

The play follows Bella Manningham, who begins to question her own sanity after hearing mysterious sounds each evening while the gas lights in her home inexplicably dim. As the unsettling events continue, Bella must determine whether she is truly losing her grip on reality—or whether someone is deliberately manipulating her into believing she is.

This adaptation adds new twists and a contemporary perspective to the classic mystery, exploring an intriguing “what if” that takes Bella’s journey in a bold and dangerous new direction as she fights to reclaim control of her life.

The New York Times described the production as “a total overhaul, complete with a nifty Act 1 curtain that forces audiences to spill into the lobby, sputtering, ‘What should she do now?'”

The production runs approximately 120 minutes, including an intermission.

Several special performances are scheduled throughout the run, including a Pay-What-You-Can Preview on August 21, Opening Night on August 22, Indigenous Community Night on August 28, a Relaxed Performance on August 30, and Talkback Thursdays, where audiences can stay after each Thursday performance to discuss the production.

The Capitol Theatre is also offering its Shop, Dine & Show package, providing a 20 per cent discount for patrons who combine their theatre experience with shopping and dining in downtown Port Hope.

The theatre remains committed to accessibility, offering services designed to ensure people of all abilities can enjoy performances in an inclusive and welcoming environment.
