Video – Drivers Still Getting Turned Around on Cobourg’s One-Way Streets
Another busy weekend along Victoria Beach, and some drivers in Cobourg still appear to be struggling with the meaning of a one-way street.
On Sunday, July 19, 2026, in a span of less than 10 minutes, five vehicles were observed travelling the wrong way on Charles Street, just south of Queen Street, around 5 p.m.
The stretch of Charles Street is clearly marked as a one-way roadway, yet several drivers continued through in the opposite direction, creating a potential safety concern for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.
Today’s Northumberland has been documenting what appears to be a recurring issue involving “directionally challenged” drivers for the past two years.
Despite the repeated observations, it remains unclear how many motorists, if any, have been stopped or charged by police for travelling the wrong way on one-way streets during that time.
The Highway Traffic Act requires drivers to obey posted traffic signs, including one-way designations. Failing to do so can result in a fine and demerit points.
For some Cobourg streets, however, the signs appear to be easier to ignore than follow.
