Rhinovirus Outbreak at Golden Plough Lodge Expands to Facility-Wide Status

A Rhinovirus outbreak at Golden Plough Lodge has expanded beyond the McMillan Garden resident home area and now includes McMillan Cottage, prompting officials to declare the outbreak facility-wide.
The outbreak was originally declared on July 13, 2026, in McMillan Garden. According to the Lodge’s Outbreak Management Team, there are currently three confirmed cases and five suspected cases combined between McMillan Garden and McMillan Cottage.
To help prevent further transmission, a number of infection prevention and control measures have been implemented.
Residents who are symptomatic or who have been identified as close contacts of someone with symptoms are being isolated in their rooms whenever possible. Those considered close exposures will remain in isolation for a minimum of five days while staff monitor them for the development of symptoms.
Dining room service has been suspended for residents in McMillan Garden and McMillan Cottage to reduce the risk of spreading the virus. Respiratory testing is continuing for symptomatic residents, and staff are monitoring residents on every shift for signs of illness. Families, Powers of Attorney (POAs), and Substitute Decision-Makers (SDMs) will be notified if a resident tests positive.
The Lodge is also asking the public to help reduce the spread of illness. Non-essential visits are strongly discouraged while the outbreak remains in effect, and visitors entering McMillan Garden or McMillan Cottage are encouraged to wear a mask. Visits should take place in residents’ rooms whenever possible and must remain in-room for residents who are in isolation.
Passive screening continues for everyone entering Golden Plough Lodge, and visitors entering the room of a resident on additional precautions are required to wear the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with Ministry of Health requirements.
As an additional precaution, all Life Enrichment group activities have been temporarily suspended throughout the facility until further notice.
The Outbreak Management Team said the enhanced precautions are intended to limit transmission and bring the outbreak to an end as quickly as possible. Additional updates will be provided as the situation evolves.
