Road Line Painting Season Underway Across Northumberland County

Northumberland County and its local municipalities are beginning the annual road line painting program, an important seasonal maintenance initiative designed to keep roads safe and clearly marked for all users.

Crews will begin refreshing pavement markings across County roads and municipal road networks this week. The work helps improve visibility, guide traffic, and enhance safety for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians.

Northumberland County maintains nearly 500 kilometres of roadway, with pavement markings requiring regular renewal to remain visible and effective. Municipal roads throughout the County will also receive fresh lane markings and other traffic guidance lines to support safe travel for both drivers and active transportation users.

Because line painting is a specialized operation, crews travel at reduced speeds to ensure markings are applied accurately and given adequate time to dry.

“Fresh, visible pavement markings are a key component of a safe transportation network,” said Denise Marshall, Director of Public Works. “We appreciate the patience and cooperation of motorists as crews complete this important work. By slowing down, maintaining a safe following distance, and respecting work zones, drivers help protect both road workers and fellow road users.”

Motorists are urged to exercise caution when approaching line painting operations and maintenance vehicles. Passing painting equipment can create safety hazards and may result in paint being splashed onto vehicles. Fresh pavement markings also contain reflective glass beads that improve nighttime visibility. Driving over wet paint can damage the markings and reduce their effectiveness.

Motorists are reminded to:

Northumberland County and its municipal partners thank residents and visitors for their patience and cooperation as crews complete this important maintenance program, helping keep local roads safe, visible, and well-maintained for everyone.
