Video – Elder Trees Take Centre Stage at Cobourg Celebration

June 20, 2026 Learning About Trees in Cobourg

A celebration highlighting the importance of protecting mature trees drew residents to Merwin Greer Public School in Cobourg’s east end on Saturday, June 20, 2026.

Hosted by the environmental charity Tree Trust Canada, the event featured a variety of hands-on activities focused on tree care and conservation. Visitors watched arborists prune two mature silver maple trees, participated in tree planting activities, learned about proper tree care, and joined a guided tour of a nearby woodlot. Special guest Professor Pricklethorn also helped engage attendees throughout the day.

Hannah Hiemstra, Chapter Coordinator for Tree Trust, said the organization is dedicated to ensuring the health and longevity of urban trees through education, advocacy, community engagement, and collaboration.

A Master of Science graduate from the University of Guelph specializing in wildlife biology, conservation, and climate action, Hiemstra said public awareness of the value of trees has grown significantly in recent years.

“Recently, I think the importance of trees has really come into the spotlight. Everyone can recognize now that trees are really important. But mature trees are an overlooked aspect of trees,” she said.

While communities are often enthusiastic about planting new trees, Hiemstra noted that protecting existing mature trees is equally important.

“We kind of forget to protect what we already have — the trees that are out there working for us every day,” she said.

Hiemstra emphasized the outsized environmental benefits provided by older trees.

“One big tree really does the work of hundreds of little trees, and it takes them hundreds of years to get to that point.”

The event aimed to raise awareness about the critical role mature trees play in urban environments, from improving air quality and reducing heat to providing wildlife habitat and strengthening community resilience in the face of climate change.
