Video – High Winds Send Powerful Waves Crashing Along Cobourg Waterfront

May 23, 2026 Waves Cobourg Harbour

Strong easterly winds whipped up Lake Ontario along Cobourg’s waterfront on Saturday (May 23, 2026), creating large waves that pounded the shoreline and east pier throughout the afternoon.

Wind gusts reached up to 62 kilometres per hour as the weather system moved across the area, sending spray high into the air and creating turbulent conditions along the waterfront.

The east pier took the brunt of the pounding waves as water crashed against the rocks and shoreline for hours.

Adding to the scene was Cobourg’s dredger, which is currently docked along the east pier while dredging operations continue in the harbour area. At times, the vessel appeared to be bearing the force of the rough lake conditions as waves slammed against the pier and surrounding waters.

Despite the windy conditions, several people stopped along the waterfront during the afternoon to watch the powerful waves rolling in off Lake Ontario.

Environment Canada had issued a wind warning for portions of the region with strong easterly winds expected throughout the day.
