Video – Students “Fix It” Right: Terry Fox Public School Club Revitalizes Jumping Pits
The Fix It Club at Terry Fox Public School proved that teamwork and initiative can make a lasting impact, as students rolled up their sleeves to restore the school’s track and field jumping pits last week.
Partnering with Northumberland Landscaping, members of the club invited additional intermediate students to take part in the hands-on project, which focused on rebuilding the long jump track and sand pit area.
Twelve-year-old Carver Oliveirs explained the scope of the work.
“We’re digging them down and making them nice again,” he said, adding the effort is about “giving back to our school and doing something good.”
For 13-year-old Arie Vanessen, the improvements are about more than appearance—they’re about function.
“What we really have right now is just the sand pits and a little piece of wood, but we’re going to make a track and refill the sandpit,” he said. “It’s important so students have a proper place to run and jump.”
Once completed, the upgraded area will provide better traction for students during their run-up, making the long jump safer and more enjoyable. The refreshed sand pits will also serve as a fun space for younger students.
The two-day project offered more than just physical improvements—it gave students a chance to learn directly from professionals while working together outdoors.
“The most fun I’ve had in a long time,” said 12-year-old Lawrence Da-Silva.
Funding for the project came from a mix of student initiative and community support. The Fix It Club contributed $800, with an additional $900 from a school improvement fund. Northumberland Landscaping donated both labour and $1,400 worth of materials, while Rock Ridges supplied the sand.
In the end, the project stands as a clear example of how student leadership, community partnerships, and a willingness to “fix it” can leave a school better than they found it.
