Ice has once again jammed the Ganaraska River in Port Hope, drawing attention from residents on Sunday, March 8, 2026.
The buildup formed just south of the Robertson Street bridge. Unlike the devastating flood of 1980, this ice jam is not expected to cause damage.
Despite the lower risk, the sight of large chunks of ice piled along the river attracted a number of people who stopped to watch the natural spectacle.
A number of geese north of the Robertson Street bridge were taking evasive action as chunks of ice headed down the river.
Ice jams can sometimes cause water levels to rise quickly, which is why local officials are keeping a close eye on the situation.
It is not yet known whether heavy equipment will be brought in on Monday to break up the ice or if the jam will clear naturally as temperatures change.
