Video – Cobourg’s East Pier Needs to Be Maintained

August 20, 2025 Life Ring Barricades

After nearly a week, a life ring that could be used in a emergency on Cobourg’s east pier hasn’t moved.

Actually it has – it’s now in the water.

Today’s Northumberland first noticed the life ring was missing last week. It is supposed to be hung on the south end of the east pier in case of emergency.

On one side is Lake Ontario, the other, Cobourg Harbour and the life ring was on a post in the middle.

The life ring has sat in its holder during harsh winters, and hot summers – for years.

But of late it’s been sitting on, or near a mooring halfway down the east pier.

But on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, Today’s Northumberland noticed it was neither in it’s holder, or where it has been for the last week.

After a closer look, the mystery was solved. The life ring is now in the water of Cobourg Harbour.

In other departments throughout Cobourg, staff inspect areas or equipment on a daily basis.

But it would seem obvious that no one has checked the east pier lately.

Not only that, two barricades that were put in place for a helicopter that landed on the pier on Saturday, August 16 are still there.

The helicopter brought a number of people from Quebec for a fishing tournament.

The helicopter left on Sunday, but after nearly five days the barricades are still in place.
