The 17th annual Port Hope Firefighters Association Hockey Tournament kicked off on Friday night at the Jack Burger Sports Complex.

Organizer Bob Cranley said the annual tournament is a type of “end of the year for hockey” with a chance for emergency services to get together during for some camaraderie.

There are eight teams in the two day tournament that started at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 4.

Port Hope Fire and Emergency Services Chief Jason Williams dropped the puck to kick off the first game between Port Hope Fire and Emergency Services and Cobourg Fire Department.

Proceeds from the tournament go towards the firefighters association which supports association functions and two antique fire apparatus for upkeep and repairs.

“After the last week that we’ve had it’s nice to be able to come and enjoy a bit of competition, tell stories and enjoy the weekend.”

With 9.5 seconds left in the third period, Port Hope tied the game 3-3, but Cobourg took the win in a shootout.
