March 14, 2025 Two People Killed in Mobile Home Fire Trenton

The community of Quinte West is in shock after two people, including an infant were killed in a fire on the east side of Trenton on Thursday, March 13, 2025.

Numbers 9-1-1 calls reporting a structure fire in a mobile home located in Bayview Estates mobile trailer park on Old Highway 2, just east of CFB Trenton were received at approximately 5:45 p.m.

Quinte West Fire Chief John Whelan said when crews arrived on scene seven-minutes later the mobile home was engulfed in flames.

“Our crews were on scene very quickly and it was full involved at that time.”

Whelan said it was a “frantic situation with neighbours telling us there were two people in the structure.

“Firefighters tried to enter the mobile home, but they couldn’t get access due to the intense heat.”

A mother and her two daughters, including a nine-year-old and seven-year-old made it out safely, but a 20-month old and her 66-year-old grandmother are unaccounted for and presumed to have died in the fire.

A 64-year-old neighbour who lives nearby tried to rescue the two individuals before fire crews arrived, but couldn’t enter due to the extreme heat. The man was transported to a trauma centre with serious burns and smoke inhalation , while the two children were transported to a children’s hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Whelan said it was a “raging fire.”

“The mobile home which was believed to have been built in the early 1970’s was “very highly combustible.”

“Within two to five minutes it was fully involved.”

The fire was so intense it melted the siding off of nearby mobile homes.

Whelan said investigators are looking into the possibility of a kitchen grease fire and water being poured onto it which would make the fire worse.

Investigators are also looking into the possibility there were no working smoke detectors, but that is not confirmed.

“Our initial crews on scene didn’t hear any, but that doesn’t mean that there weren’t.”

Office of the Fire Marshal, Operations Manager for Fire Investigations William Hay said two investigators from the OFM were assigned to the fire to determine the cause.

On Wednesday, a 46-year-old woman and nine-year-old child died in a fire in Oshawa.

“We’ve had a tragic few weeks where we did have a higher number of fatalities then we’d like.”

“It’s very tragic. I don’t believe it’s anything in particular – I just think it’s just been a particulary bad month.”

Quinte West firefighters will be conducting a smoke alarm blitz in the trailer park following the fire.

There is no confirmation there wasn’t a smoke alarm, but Hay said a smoke alarm provides early detection to a fire, but it’s important to also plan your escape.

“Fires can move rapidly depending on what’s causing them, so we always try to instill with everybody that not only make sure you do have a working smoke alarm, but you have in mind exactly how you’re going to get out of your residence.”

As investigators arrived on scene, neighbours in the community brought flowers and places them at the scene while others consoled each other.

Whelan sends his condolences on behalf of the fire department to the family of the victims and people in the trailer park.

“Our hearts go out to the family and the neighbours in this community. It was a very tragic.”

The investigation by the Quinte West OPP Crime Unit, the Office of the Fire Marshal and Office of the Chief Coroner is continuing.
