Northumberland County Announces Reconstruction of Burnley Bridge

Northumberland County has announced plans to reconstruct the aging Burnley Bridge in the hamlet of Burnley on County Road 29 in Alnwick/Haldimand Township. Originally built in 1950, the single-span bridge across Burnley Creek, just south of Noonan Road, has reached the end of its useful life. Ongoing monitoring and assessments identified the need for major rehabilitation, however, given the costs and the need to meet current and future transportation demands, a full replacement is considered the most feasible solution.

The replacement project will enhance safety and bring the bridge up to modern standards. The existing single-lane bridge will be replaced with a two-lane concrete rigid frame bridge to better accommodate current traffic needs. Construction is anticipated to begin in the summer of 2025 and will require a full road closure on a section of County Road 29, lasting approximately four to six months, pending council approval. Speed reduction measures will also be permanently implemented to improve safety in the area.

“The Burnley Bridge has served the community well for over 70 years but no longer meets the needs of today’s drivers,” states Denise Marshall, Director of Public Works for Northumberland County. “This reconstruction project will enhance safety, improve traffic flow, and create a structure that will serve the hamlet of Burnley and surrounding communities for years to come.”

To share details with the community, Northumberland County will host a public information session, where residents can meet with the project team, review proposed designs, and discuss project details.

“We invite local residents to join us at the information session,” adds Ms. Marshall. “It’s a chance to learn more about the project, ask questions and understand the road closure and timelines, as we work to deliver these important upgrades for our community.”

As required under the Canadian Navigable Waters Act, Northumberland County has posted a public notice of the Burnley Bridge replacement project on the Navigable Waters Registry (registry number 11864). Residents are invited to provide comments regarding the project’s potential impact on marine navigation through the Navigable Waters Registry at http://cps.canada.ca/ or by email to County Manager of Infrastructure Peter Deshane at deshanep@northumberland.ca.
