With the pending sale of Brookside property on King Street East in Cobourg, Today’s Northumberland took a walk through the encampment on Saturday November 2, 2024.
The date for the sale is November 13, 2024 and as yet, there has been no further update.
The security guards are no longer at the driveway entrance and have moved back into the guardhouse because of the colder weather.
Taking a walk through the area shortly before 11 a.m. on Saturday it appears there aren’t near as many people as there are tents.
Some of the tents are used for storage, some for garbage and some are just empty.
There are some wood stoves at the encampment.
A person Today’s Northumberland spoke with at the encampment said the fire department has given approval for the wood stoves.
There are a number of propane and water tanks throughout the encampment and at least one generator that was operating on Saturday.
In certain areas of the encampment drug supplies litter the ground, but in one area there is a stand with a Naloxone kit on the side and a number of drawers with items listed on the drawers for condoms, tinfoil and straws, pipes, bubble pipes, and injection kits.
Although you’ll rarely see a bicycle that is intact, there are many, many bicycle parts around the encampment.
A white board near the back of the encampment says it is for the “Cobourg Encampment Rules.”
Rule 1. Clean up after yourself
Rule 2 If it doesn’t belong to you do not touch it.
Rule 3 Unless you are invested in, do not enter someone else’s tent.
Rule 4 No exceptions on stealing
Rule 5 Pick up your harm reduction supplies (do not leave needles on the ground)
Rule 6 Males need to keep there perverted comments to themselves and not put their d–ks in under-aged girls.
The encampment resident said the residents are aware of the November 13 deadline and believe on that date they will be given a 72-hour notice to leave the premises.
