Editorial – Break-In at Beyond The Blue Box Could Have Been Much Worse
It could have been so much worse.
Beyond the Blue Box had a break-in sometime during the early morning hours of Thursday, May 23, 2024.
The suspect or suspects broke through a small window of the garage door leading to the building that houses Christmas decorations. Thousands of Christmas decorations.
It’s the sign of the times for any small or large town this happens too.
But Beyond the Blue Box does so much for this community. Giving back 100% of the proceeds they make.
Beyond the Blue Box also employees people with disabilities.
They help everyone in times of need.
But what happened on Thursday was a slap in the face to everyone who works hard at the facility and also to everyone who supports Beyond the Blue Box.
Breaking into a building for warmth is one thing – but breaking into it to consumer illegal drugs, leaving needles, glass pipes, and other drug paraphernalia is another.
It was just pure luck the building wasn’t destroyed by fire.
If people were consuming drugs, they could have easily been trapped in a fire.
Candles on the floor burned with plastic containers just above them.
Drugs and fire can be a lethal combination at anytime.
In September 2023 a fire destroyed one of the buildings at Beyond the Blue Box.
The Office of the Fire Marshal concluded the fire wasn’t suspicious, though many in town think otherwise.
On August 12, 2022 another fire was discovered on the west side of the building. It was extinguished before any serious damage occurred.
Cobourg Police Scenes of Crime officers arrived took photographs, DNA swabs, and fingerprinted areas of where the break-in took place.
It’s likely that Beyond the Blue Box likely helped the suspects at one point or another with clothing and this is how they are repaid?
Police are doing all they can. They are stretched to the max, but with luck they’ll catch the suspect/s responsible for the break-in.
If this message reaches the person’s responsible and you want to do something good in your life.
Own up to what you did and face the music – turn yourself in.
But please don’t play the pity card once you’re before the courts.
It’s being used enough lately.
