Russian Couple Living In Cobourg Set Up Memorial In Front of Victora Hall for Alexi Navalny

Alexei Navalny Memorial Cobourg March 1, 2024

A Russian couple who now live in Cobourg have set up a memorial in honour of Alexei Navalny in front of Victoria Hall.

Navalny was a Russian opposition leader, lawyer and anti-corruption activist who died on February 16, 2024 at the age of 47 under suspicious circumstances while in prison.

Alexander Sorkin and his wife Tatoama created the small memorial with Navalny’s photo and candle beside it on the day of Navalny’s funeral (March 1, 2024). An unknown person placed flowers the following days.

On Monday evening Sorkin was at the memorial relighting the candle and tidying up and spoke with Today’s Northumberland about the loss for his Country.

“His loss to Russia is the loss of hope for a brand new Russia – better Russia,” said Sorkin.

Russia entails the entire Country and the people, not just Putin.

Sorkin said when he heard of the death of Navalny he wasn’t surprised.

“I was greatly saddened that it finally happened. We knew that it could happen and probably would happen, but when it happened – I just witnessed history and it’s really sad.”

Sorkin for the people of Russia and to him, Navalny’s death is almost like comparing the assassination of John F. Kennedy (November 22, 1963), or John Lennon (December 8, 1980).
