Lakefront Utilities Inc. Launches Green Button to Help Customers Understand Their Electricity Usage

Lakefront Utilities Inc.’s President and CEO, Dereck Paul, shakes hands with Minister of Energy, Todd Smith, to commemorate the launch of Green Button for local customers.

Lakefront Utilities Inc. is pleased to announce the launch of the Green Button™ initiative. This new technology allows Lakefront’s residential, commercial, and industrial customers to track and control their energy usage easily.

“We are thrilled to offer this technology and empower our customers to better understand how they use energy and take action to reduce their usage,” said Dereck Paul, President & CEO Of Lakefront Utilities Inc. “By using the Share My Data and Connect My Data feature available on our website, customers have access to a whole new level of energy data that can be delivered easily and securely to their preferred application or device.”

The launch of the Green Button application coincides with Lakefront Utilities’ introduction of the Province’s new Ultra-Low Overnight (ULO) price plan. The new ULO pricing structure is a third option for residential and small business electricity customers, in addition to the existing Time-of-Use and Tiered Plans. Providing customers with price plan options and giving them tools such as Green Button are two key ways that Lakefront Utilities is helping their customers understand their usage and save money on their monthly utility bills.

“Families and businesses want to be in the driver’s seat when it comes to their energy bills,” said Todd Smith, Minister of Energy. “Green Button is part of our commitment to give consumers more choice when it comes to their energy use and will enable easy, quick and safe access to their consumption data through smartphone or computer apps so they can track and control energy use or switch electricity price plans to save money.”

The Green Button™ initiative is a province-wide implementation by energy companies throughout Ontario. It provides electric meter interval usage data, along with billing information, which customers can either download themselves or share with a third-party provider. Once a Third-party company goes through an onboarding approval process, they can then be securely authorized by a Lakefront account holder to receive the customer’s data through Connect My Data. Lakefront customers can authorize the transfer of energy data through Lakefront’s secure, web-based API.

This allows customers to work with third parties to understand their home or businesses’ energy usage and the cost of using appliances, equipment, electric vehicles, solar panels and other products.

“Lakefront Utilities worked closely with Screaming Power to build Ontario-specific features, integrate and test data flows, and train staff on this new Green Button Toolset provided by UtilityAPI Inc. Lakefront leads the market in providing enabling solutions for their customers, which is reflected in the solution’s ease of use and ability to engage others to help reduce energy costs and usage,” said Gary Michor, CEO of Screaming Power.
