Despite having no portable toilets, the Haliburton Kawartha Pine Ridge District Health Unit has stated there is no health concern at the encampment outside the former Brookside Youth Centre in Cobourg.

The encampment houses approximately 30-50 people and has been at the site for well over a month with no signs of dispersing.

Reaching out to Ashley Ann Beaulac who is Manager of Communication Services with the health unit she stated, “there is currently no indicated health hazard at this time.”

“Currently there is no indication of a health hazard at Brookside, which would be sewage not being disposed or discharged properly (for example directly onto the surface of the ground) as the occupants have access to facilities offsite/within the building onsite. If sewage was found to not being disposed or properly the health unit would have the authority to request portable toilets be provided.”
