The Special Investigations Unit has invoked their mandate after a Port Hope Police officer was injured during what is believed to be a shooting at the Port Hope McDonald’s on Sunday, July 30, 2023.

Port Hope Police Chief Tim Farquharson spoke with Today’s Northumberland after just leaving Northumberland Hills Hospital.

“The officer is conscience and talking. So that’s fantastic. It’s very, very good news.”

Farquharson added he said the female officer is in “stable” condition, but couldn’t talk about the injuries because the SIU has invoked their mandate.

“Because this is an SIU investigation and they’ve invoked, we have to be very careful with the integrity of the investigation not to taint it in anyway.”

Farquharson said when you hear an officer has been injured, “your stomach turns upside down the hair on the back on your neck goes up. There is a lot of fear and anxiety until you get here and see the officer and other officers involved as well.”

Standing alongside Farquharson were OPP Chief Superintendent Karl Thomas and Northumberland OPP Inspector Kristy McNaughton.

“Currently our Criminal Investigations Branch is assigned to this investigation we’re working with Port Hope Police and liaising with SIU,” said Thomas.

But he would elaborate if a officer with the Port Hope Police discharged their weapon and if that was the reason for SIU to be involved.

“There are rules that SIU have they did invoke on this call. I don’t want to comment on the actual reason.”

Today’s Northumberland was told by witnesses around 5 p.m., a officer from the Port Hope Police Service fired their weapon at a stolen pickup truck that was waiting in line at the drive-thru at McDonald’s on Rose Glen Road in Port Hope.

It’s believed a ricochet from the bullet struck the officer in the head.

The pickup drove up onto the curb, across the grass around the police vehicle and sped away.

Witnesses said the officer walked to the ambulance and gave a “thumbs up.”

The entire McDonald’s parking lot was cordoned off as a crime scene.

Police officers were visible on exit ramps along Highway 401 leading into Toronto.

At Dale Road and County Road 28, two officers were looking for any sign of the vehicle.

Earlier in the day on Sunday, the same stolen pickup truck was spotted in the west end of Cobourg. The vehicle was heading north on Rogers Road and turned left onto County Road 2 with a person following it.

The truck was last scene in the Theatre Road/Dale Road area. Northumberland OPP searched a compound of a business where the suspect once worked and put down a spike belt just in case the stolen vehicle was in the compound and decided to flee.

At that time police couldn’t locate the vehicle.

Last Monday, the vehicle was also involved in a fail to stop for police and pursuit by Madoc OPP.

Late last week the pickup also involved in a minor collision with a Cobourg Police cruiser near the Cobourg Library but the stolen pickup once again got away.

The 2004 GMC Canyon 5 speed that was stolen between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. on Sunday, July 23, 2023 in east end of Cobourg.

The suspect in the investigation is Jordan Denny.

If you spot the vehicle do not approach and call your nearest police service or 9-1-1 immediately.
