A U-Haul reported as stolen was spotted by Port Hope Police on Sunday, March 13, 2023.
Inspector Katie Andrews said Port Hope Police received a “bolo” (be on the lookout) for a stolen U-Haul with a camper attached.
Approximately an hour later members of the day-shift spotted a post on Today’s Northumberland by a person stating they had witnessed the U-Haul and camper at the Shell Station on Toronto Road just south of Highway 401.
“We saw this trailer pulling out of the gas station on Toronto Road about an hour ago,” the post stated.
Officers attended and determined the vehicle had been at the gas station and were able to retrieve pictures of the suspects along with images of the vehicle and trailer and was forwarded on to the Ontario Provincial Police.
It’s now know if a pursuit along Highway 401 on Sunday is related to the incident.
Quinte West said at approximately 11:30 a.m. a officer partolling Highway 401 attempted to pull over a truck that was undersized for the large trailer/camper it was towing.
The driver failed to pull over and was eventually arrested in Colborne.
Quinte West OPP referred calls regarding the investigation to Ottawa Police and Ottawa Police media section contacted their Auto Theft Unit, but as of press time (7:15 p.m.) Today’s Northumberland has not heard back.
