On Sunday, December 25, 2022, at 9:20 p.m., police on general patrol conducted a traffic stop in the area of Elgin Street West.
The driver was known to be wanted by the Cobourg Police Service on two outstanding warrants.
As a result of the police investigation, 36-year-old Laurelle Cox of Port Hope was arrested and charged with the following new offences:
1. Dirty Plate – contrary to section 13(2) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA)
2. Drive Without Proper Rear Light – Motor Vehicle – contrary to section 62(1) HTA
3. Driving While Under Suspension – contrary to section 53(1) HTA
4. Fail to Surrender Permit for Motor Vehicle – contrary to section 7(5)(a) HTA
5. Fail to Surrender Insurance Card – contrary to section 3(1) of the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act (CAIA)
6. Driver – Fail to Properly Wear Seat Belt – contrary to section 106(2) HTA
7. Drive While Passenger Under 16 Fails to Properly Wear Seat Belt – contrary to section 106(4)(a)(ii) HTA
8. Drive Motor Vehicle – No Validation on Plate – Contrary to Section 7(l)(c)(i) HTA
The accused was charged with the following offences from the outstanding warrants:
1. Flight from Peace Officer- contrary to section 320.17 Criminal Code of Canada (CCC)
2. Dangerous Operation – contrary to section 320.13(2) CCC
3. Driver Fail to Surrender Driver’s License – contrary to section 33(1) HTA
4. Fail to Surrender Permit – contrary to section 7(5)(a) HTA
5. Assault a Peace Officer – contrary to section 270.01(1)(a) CCC
6. Obstruct Police Officer: contrary to section 129(a) CCC
7. Fail to Surrender Insurance Card – contrary to section 3(1) CAIA
8. Fail to Attend Court – contrary to section 145(4)(b) CCC
The accused was held for a bail hearing and later released with a court date scheduled for January 11, 2023.
