Greg Burns Withdraws from Port Hope Mayors Race

Greg Burns has announced his is withdrawing from the Port Hope Mayor’s race.
The announcement was made on his Facebook page and is below.
Since announcing my candidacy for Mayor of Port Hope on May 16, 2022, I have received tremendous support from right across this community. It is, therefore, so very difficult to announce that, for reasons of health, I must withdraw my name as candidate for Mayor.
Those of you who know me, know that I am a private person who is active in a public arena. And while I value my privacy, I want to be clear about the reason behind this regrettable decision. I have a history of cardiovascular disease that I have managed well for years. But recently, signs have appeared that there is cause for concern.
Running for political office, under these circumstances, is now, for me, unwise. Aside from my health concerns, I must also be sure that if granted the privilege to serve as Mayor that I will be in a position to fulfil the duties of office. In fairness, I no longer can offer that assurance.
Therefore, I have advised the Deputy Clerk of the Municipality of my decision and my name will be removed from the electoral information. Also, funds already so generously contributed to my campaign are unspent and will be returned to those donors.
I step aside with real regret. I will certainly do my best to serve this community in other ways as I have done since leaving Council as your Deputy Mayor four years ago. All in all, I wish things were different. But life has a way of ‘calling the shots’ from time to time.
My deepest appreciation to everyone who has given me both personal and political support. I cannot adequately express how grateful I am – except, simply to say it: thank you – thank you so very much.
