A group of friends helped rescue a raccoon spotted swimming in the Cobourg Harbour on Saturday, June 11, 2022.
At approximately 12:30 p.m. David McNabney and his friends were out on the east pier when they spotted a raccoon in the struggling in the middle of the harbour swimming in circles.
McNabney called the Northumberland Humane Society and the Municipal Animal Services to see if someone could help.
The Humane Society said to reach out to by-law and to leave it alone if it wasn’t bothering anyone.
“It looked exhausted and we couldn’t leave it to drown.”
The group of friends yelled at a boater who was passing by, but the boater continued.
When the same boater passed by again, the group yelled again, waving their arms and got the attention of the boater.
The boater coerced the raccoon to the pier and then lifted him up, safely onto the pier.
